Reflection of the lesson!

The lesson made me realize on the common mistakes people make when preparing a lesson plan. Our group spotted different kinds of errors seen in the 3 samples of lesson plans that circulated within us.

From grammatical errors to missing components, we realized how knitty-gritty we can be. This is useful as it sets a benchmark on how we are suppose to do our lesson plan so that it would not be repeated and spotted by our lecturers. Basic things like alignment of the lesson plan, font, font size, page number, etc should be standardized as it will reflect negatively on us if such mistakes were seen by others.

The lesson also made me realize the “standard operating procedure” (S.O.P) of a lesson plan. I never knew what is required of a lesson plan but with this lesson of criticizing lesson plan of others, I have the general idea of what is suppose to be included. It is very important of a lesson plan to be realistic. For example, there must be a 5-10 minutes of administration time given at the start of the lesson to settle the students down instead of starting the lesson at that stipulated time. Also, the duration given must coincide with the content of every activity.

An interesting area to be highlighted of what was learned was on how to relate the different topics while teaching. This is crucial to let the students see the link between the topics so that there would be a consistent flow during teaching. I never thought of such before and I find it useful to apply it during teaching.

Even though giving critiques on the lesson plan of others may sound negative, however, it allows one to realize and improve his/her work to a quality one.

Reflection on 25 Aug Lesson

After the lesson, i learnt how to craft an expected lesson plan for a class. With the various lesson plans being critiqued by us, i know what are the tips i could and should follow to make my own lesson plan a more realistic one. Tips like the arrangment of activities to have a smooth flow during lessons, good time management for the each activities being carried out, keeping in mind to have time allowances for students to settle down and having activities to ensure reinforcement of knowledge to students.

I learnt that having a smooth flow of lessons is the most important for the benefit of students. This would allow them to understand a particular topic better since the lessons are inter-related to one another thus we can tap on their prior knowledge to start a new topic. So linking the previous lesson to the next lesson is important. Also as teachers, we should relate the activities or information being taught to them to real life scenarios. This enables them to have a better recollection of the lesson since it would be applicable in their daily life.

Basic grammatical mistakes, realignment of tables or words and same font size and types should not be major problem when crafting a lesson plan since Microsoft Word has the ability to detect such mistakes. Furthermore, i feel that it does not leave a good impression on a teacher to be making such mistakes as it showed how little the effort is shown from the teacher's part.

However, at the end of the day, i do know that to critique others' lesson plans and to create our own lesson plans without making the same mistake is the most challenging task. It is because we might not realise the mistakes we make that easily. We might be a little bias towards our own work, thinking that we had done it well but in actual fact, we are repeating the same mistakes. Therefore, it is important that we are aware and realise these possible mistakes done by others and remember them so that we would try our best to not repeat them.

Reflection on the lesson

The lesson was interesting as we had the opportunity to comment on three lesson plans on textiles and clothing which were prepared by other teachers. After having one round of discussion about the lesson plans, I found out that we could become so critical about other's work that even a tiny mistake could be amplified greatly, especially when we were given the chance to criticize it. Well, it is always easier said than done. Thus, we have to constantly remind ourselves that we should not repeat similar mistakes when we do our lesson plans in future as we should have learnt from others’ mistakes.

I learnt that we should always link the topic taught in the previous lesson to the current topic before we start the lesson since it is easier and more effective for students to comprehend and remember when we engage their prior knowledge. Isolation of topics taught would cause the students not to take the lesson seriously since they do not understand the significance of learning the lesson and connect it to their prior knowledge. In addition, I also learnt that we should summarize the topic at different timings such that the students would not be “lost” and we could also assess their understandings from time to time in order to enhance their learning process.

Sometimes we forget that the real world context might not be relevant or appropriate as we are teaching teenagers who are not mature enough to understand the examples well and see it from our perspective. This would definitely lead to unnecessary misunderstandings that would affect the teaching and learning process.

Moreover, I also realized it is important to keep improving on the lesson plans before submitting it to the cooperating teachers and supervisors. Basic grammatical and spelling errors should not be reflected in the lesson plans as it shows that the teacher does not put in adequate effort and concern in her work, especially when Microsoft Word has the ability of performing spell check which eases the vetting.

Last but not least, it is always better to make the students anticipate the next lesson by telling them in advance. It is also important to make the topic sounds exciting in order to arouse their interest in learning and also make them look forward to coming to school.

Reflections on lesson..

After looking at other people's lesson plans, I learnt about the things I have to take note of when I am doing my own lesson plans. It is easy to critique people's work without even battling an eyelid. But when the times comes for us to do it, we may realize that it is easy to say, but not easy to do. It is also good that we learn from other people's mistakes as we don't live long enough to make all the mistakes and learn from those mistakes. However, in every lesson plan, there is something that is commendable. After all, the teacher has put in effort and has thought about the lesson before penning it down. We do make mistakes but what is important is that we learn from them. Hopefully, I will write better lesson plans after learning from my own and other people's mistakes.

Other than looking at lesson plans, we also have the opportunity to see the artistic works done using the napkin technique. The art and crafts were beautifully decorated and can be used in many different ways. I am impressed by how the crafts were made with so much detail and they seem like they can be put on sale! But for now, I have no idea what the napkin technique is, nor the material used for the method. But calling it the napkin technique, I supposed napkins are used in one way or another. In time to come when the module comes to an end, I hope to be able to create similarly beautiful crafts and too impress people with my own handicrafts.(*^^*)

The website could be used in teaching students how to shop smartly by comparing the prices and quality. The students should be encouraged to read consumer reviews before they make their decision in purchasing the clothes and accessories so that they could check the reliability of the website. Other than that, they would also be taught on how to shop within their stipulated budget so that they would not be addicted to online shopping and splurge all their pocket money and savings on clothes. This would also prevent them from becoming an impulsive buyer that buys clothes that are unnecessary and non-fitting. The students would also learn about different payment methods and the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Consumer’s rights are also another important lesson for them as they would become more aware of their rights and know possible actions that they could take if they have purchased a faulty items or missing items in their order.
